Cheap vs right
Lower-grade resin breaks down faster on chlorinated city water. Once it breaks down, it can pass into the plumbing and look like fine yellow sand in a tap aerator.
Replacing the softener is the good outcome. The expensive one is replacing what the loose resin fouls on its way through, which across taps, toilets, the dishwasher and the washing machine can reach $7,000 in damages to your plumbing system. A softener sized wrong also costs you money every time it regenerates, for as long as you own it.
