What your pipes are telling you

Every symptomhas a usual suspect.

Pipes rarely fail without warning. A stain, a hammering sound or a slow drop in pressure is usually the first sign, and fixing it then costs far less than after a burst.

  • Banging when a tap shuts→Water hammer, often a missing arrestor, unfastened pipes or high pressure
  • Pressure dropped over months→Pressure reducing valve, scale, or a clogged softener
  • Green crust on copper fittings→Slow pinhole leak starting
  • Orange and blue plastic pipe→Possibly KITEC, worth checking
  • Water stain on a ceiling→A leak above it, find it before it spreads

Hear it, see it, or measure it?

Tell us what you notice and when. That narrows it down before we arrive.

Water hammer: a fast-closing valve stops moving water and sends a shock through the pipe; an arrestor absorbs it. Illustration by Einwechter Plumbing & Heating, Kitchener-Waterloo
That bang is water hammer. An arrestor gives the shock a cushion to push against.

Low water pressure?

Check the softener before you replace pipes.

In homes with a water softener, low pressure through the whole house is often the softener, not the plumbing. When the resin inside breaks down, it can restrict flow. Put the softener in bypass: if pressure comes back, the pipes are fine.  But do not put the softener back into operation or risk resin releasing into the plumbing system.  Call us.

  • Pressure back in bypass? The softener needs service. See our water softener page.
  • Still low? Likely the pressure reducing valve, scale in old galvanized pipe, or the service line.

Questions we get asked

Pipe repair FAQ

How much does it cost to fix a leaking pipe?

Most pipe repairs fall between $300 and $3,000 plus HST. Replacing a section of water line is usually $370 to $2,100.

Why do my pipes bang when I turn off a tap?

That is water hammer. It is usually fixed with an arrestor or a pressure reducing valve, typically $500 to $3,000 plus HST depending on cause.

Why is my water pressure low?

If you have a softener, try bypass first. Otherwise it is often the pressure reducing valve, old galvanized pipe, or the service line from the street.

Should I repair or repipe?

If one section failed, repair it. If fittings are failing all over, or you have KITEC or old galvanized pipe, replacing is cheaper over time. A whole-home water line repipe typically runs $5,000 to $10,000 plus HST.

Copper or PEX (flexible plastic pipe)?

Both work well. We choose based on where the pipe runs and what it connects to, and explain why.

How long will my water be off?

For a typical leak repair, about 3 to 4 hours. A larger section or a repipe takes longer, and we tell you the plan before the water goes off.
