Why drains keep clogging

A snake opens the drain.Jetting cleans the pipe.

A snake pokes a hole through the blockage. If it was a removable blockage, problem solved.  If its grease and grime, when the water comes back, so can the clog. Hydro jetting pressure-washes the inside of the pipe back to something close to its original state, and that result tends to hold for the long term.

  • Kitchen sink keeps backing up→Grease on the pipe wall: jetting, not snaking
  • Toilet clogs again and again→Snaked, or pulled and reset to reach it
  • Floor drain backing up→Main line cleared, then checked with a camera
  • Several drains slow at once→A main sewer problem: cleared and inspected
  • Sewer smell in the basement→Traced to the cause before anything is replaced

Not sure which one you need?

Tell us which drains are slow and how often it happens. We will tell you the likely fix and the price on the phone.

Snake vs. hydro jetter. A snake pokes a hole. Jetting scrubs the pipe wall back to its full size.

Why drains clog

Not every clog is the same clog. The cause decides the fix.

A slow or backed-up drain is a symptom. Sometimes it’s one thing stuck in the pipe. Sometimes it’s years of buildup. And sometimes the pipe itself was put in wrong, or has broken. We find out which before we decide how to fix it, so you’re not paying to clear the same drain every few months.

1Something big got flushed or dropped

What’s going on: Wipes, a toy, paper towel or a too-big wad of paper is stuck in the pipe or the toilet.

How we know: It came on suddenly, usually at one fixture, and the line was fine before.

What we do: We snake it. A spinning cable grabs or breaks up the object and clears the line. Usually quick and simple.

2Years of kitchen grime: “like jello in the pipe”

What’s going on: Grease, oil, coffee grounds and food scraps go down as liquid or mush, then set into a thick, jelly-like sludge that slowly closes the pipe.

How we know: It’s the kitchen line, it got slower over months, and when we open it, it looks and feels like jello.

What we do: A snake only pokes a hole through jello, and it closes back up. We hydro jet it: high-pressure water scrubs the full circle of the pipe and resets it to its original size.

3Back fall: a drain that runs uphill

What’s going on: Drains need a steady downhill slope. A pipe installed level, tilted the wrong way, or sagging in the middle leaves water and solids sitting in it.

How we know: A camera shows water standing in the pipe, and a level shows the slope is wrong.

What we do: Clearing it is only a short-term fix. The lasting fix is re-piping that section at the correct slope.

4A turn that’s too sharp

What’s going on: Where a drain changes direction on its side, it needs a long, gentle sweep. A tight 90° elbow makes the water slam into the fitting and drop its solids.

How we know: The camera shows the clog sitting at the same bend every time.

What we do: We replace the sharp elbow with a long-sweep fitting, or two 45s, so the waste keeps moving.

5A broken main sewer

What’s going on: Digging for a deck, fence or utility line, or the ground settling, can crack the sewer or drop a section into the gravel.  Sometimes right after the utility company did some work on the lawn.

How we know: We prove it with a camera. You’ll see the crack, the offset joint or the spot where the pipe drops away.

What we do: Repair or replace the broken section. If the whole line is failing, we replace it from the house to the property line, with a permit and inspection.

6Tree roots in an old clay sewer

What’s going on: Older clay sewers have a joint every couple of feet. Roots find the moisture there and grow inside into a net that catches everything.

How we know: The camera shows roots coming through the joints.

What we do: We cut them out with a root-cutting head. Roots grow back, so when the clay is cracked or sagging, the permanent fix is a new sewer line.

Six causes, six different fixes.
A drain with the correct slope carries waste away; back fall leaves water and solids sitting in the pipe. Illustration by Einwechter Plumbing & Heating, Kitchener-Waterloo
Back fall. When the pipe tilts the wrong way, solids get left behind every time.
A long-sweep fitting keeps waste moving; a sharp 90-degree turn makes solids drop out and pile up. Illustration by Einwechter Plumbing & Heating, Kitchener-Waterloo
Too sharp a turn. Solids drop out at the corner and build up.

The camera proves it. Roots and breaks show on screen, so the fix matches the problem.

Why we often recommend a camera: clearing a drain without knowing why it clogged means guessing. A camera shows exactly what’s in the pipe, so you pay for the right fix once.

Questions we get asked

Drain cleaning FAQ

How much does it cost to unclog a drain in Kitchener-Waterloo?

Snaking a drain with the fixture left in place is $300 plus HST. Pulling and resetting a toilet to reach the clog is $500. A kitchen line hydro jetted clean is $650.

What is hydro jetting?

High-pressure water that scours the inside of the pipe clean, removing the grease, scale and sludge that a snake leaves behind.

Why does my kitchen sink keep clogging?

Grease builds up on the pipe wall. A snake opens a path, but the buildup stays, so the clog comes back. Jetting removes it.

When do I need a camera inspection?

When a drain keeps clogging, several drains back up at once, or you suspect roots or a broken pipe. The camera shows the problem before anyone digs.

Can roots in my sewer line be cleared?

Yes. Root-cutting or jetting clears the main line, however roots regrow, and a camera shows whether the pipe itself needs repair.
