New sump basin with sealed lid and Liberty pump set into a cut basement floor, installed by Einwechter Plumbing & Heating, Kitchener-Waterloo

No sump pit?

We can add onewhere there never was one.

If water collects under your floor or seeps in at the walls and you have nowhere to pump it from, we can put a sump pit in. It is real work: we cut the concrete floor, dig the hole, set an 18 by 30 inch basin with a sealed lid in clean stone, install the pump, and run a discharge line outside. Then we patch the concrete around it.

If we can reach your weeping tile from the hole, we tie into it. If we cannot, we drill the basin so groundwater can get in and be pumped out.

New sump pit, pump and discharge line About $2,400 Plus HST. Add a battery backup for $1,100 more.

The outside line ends within 18 inches of the house unless you ask for more. We strongly recommend carrying it further away so the water does not come straight back to your foundation. An outlet near the sump is done by an electrician.

Battery backup

The storm that floods basements usually takes the power with it.

A primary pump does nothing without electricity. A battery backup sits in the same pit and takes over automatically when the power fails or the main pump stops, so the water keeps going out.

We install the Liberty 441. It runs on a 12-volt marine battery with an automatic charger, sounds an alarm when it is running, and Liberty rates it for up to about 4 hours of steady pumping or about 30 hours of on-and-off pumping, depending on how much water is coming in.

  • Pump replaced with a battery backup: $1,800 plus HST, existing pit.
  • Backup added to a new install: +$1,100.
  • Wifi alarm: +$760, so your phone knows before your floor does.

When the pump stops

A sump pump failson the worst night of the year.

Sump pumps work hardest during storms and spring thaw, which is also when the power is most likely to go out. A pump that has quietly worn out, or a pit with no backup, is how basements flood.

Replacing a pump in a pit that already exists is the common job. Cutting a new pit into a basement floor is a different job.

Questions we get asked

Sump pump FAQ

How much does sump pump replacement cost in Kitchener-Waterloo?

Replacing a pump in an existing pit is $650 plus HST. With a battery backup, $1,800. A brand new pit and pump, which means cutting the concrete and digging, is $2,400.

Do I need a battery backup?

If a power outage during a storm would flood your basement, yes. The backup takes over automatically when the power or the main pump fails.

How long does a battery backup run?

Liberty rates the 441 for up to about 4 hours of steady pumping, or about 30 hours of on-and-off pumping. How long yours lasts depends on how much water comes in during the outage.

Can a smart monitor watch my sump pump?

Yes. The Moen smart sump monitor sends alerts to your phone for rising water, a struggling pump, a power or Wi-Fi outage, freezing temperatures and high humidity. It is $450 plus HST installed.

How do I know my sump pump is failing?

Constant running, rapid on-and-off cycling, strange noises, or water in the pit with the pump not starting are the common signs.  You can test it by bypassing the float and plugging directly into the wall or lifting the float to simulate high water level.

Can you put a sump pump in a basement that does not have one?

Yes. We cut the concrete, dig the pit, set a sealed 18 by 30 inch basin in stone, install the pump and run the discharge line outside, then patch the floor. It is about $2,400 plus HST. The outlet near the sump is done by an electrician.

What does a wifi alarm do?

Our Wi-Fi alarm is the Liberty NightEye. A float in the pit sets off a loud 86 dB alarm and sends a message to your phone, including when the power goes out, so you know to check on your sump pump. It is $760 plus HST when installed at the same time we install your pump or pit.
