Common softener problems
Most softener problems fall into a handful of causes. Some are a five-minute fix. Others mean the resin or the valve is done.
Check the salt and look for a hard crust in the brine tank. If that’s not it, book a visit.
Low pressure?
Softener resin is made of tiny beads. Over time, and faster with chlorinated city water, the beads break down into mush that packs the tank and restricts flow. Put the softener in bypass. If your pressure jumps back, the softener is the cause. Softener replacement may be required.
Repair or replace?
| Repair makes sense when | Replace makes sense when |
|---|---|
| The softener is only a few years old | It is older and displaying issues |
| One part failed: A service call and a part could fix | Resin and valve both need work |
| It is sized right for your home | It was undersized from the start and regenerating daily |
| Parts are still available | Parts are discontinued |
