Plumbing in Kitchener
Kitchener’s water, its older neighbourhoods and its permit rules shape a lot of the work we do here.
Water
Most of Kitchener’s tap water comes from the Region’s groundwater wells, blended with treated Grand River water. It is hard, which is why a softener protects water heaters, fixtures and dishwashers here.
Permits
The City of Kitchener requires a building permit for plumbing work on water, sanitary and storm lines, including emergency repairs. After an after-hours emergency, the permit can be applied for the next business day. We handle it.
Older homes
Homes in older neighbourhoods may still have old water service pipes. Kitchener Utilities offers free lead testing for single and semi-detached homes with an unsoftened kitchen tap. If the line needs replacing, see pipe repair.
Storms
Heavy summer storms, like the one that flooded parts of Waterloo Region in July 2026, test sump pumps and floor drains. A battery backup sump pump keeps working when the power goes out.

Questions we get asked
Our service call is $225 plus HST. It covers the trip, a fully stocked van and the first 1.5 hours of work. Many common jobs have published prices, so you know the number before we arrive. For bigger jobs you get a written price before we start.
For most plumbing work on water, sanitary and storm lines, yes. The City of Kitchener requires a building permit, including for emergency repairs, and an inspection before buried pipe is covered. We pull the permit and book the inspection as part of the job.
Yes. Kitchener’s water comes mostly from regional groundwater wells and is hard enough to scale up water heaters, faucets and dishwashers. A softener sized to your household fixes it. Our 30,000 grain softener, right for most households of two to four on city water, is $1,500 plus HST.
The City’s backflow program covers businesses, larger multi-residential buildings and irrigation systems. If you received a letter or have a backflow device, it needs an annual test by a qualified tester. Our residential test is $225 plus HST, and we file the report with the City for you.
We offer 24-hour emergency service for existing customers. Our office hours are Monday to Friday, 7am to 5pm. If you have water where it shouldn’t be, shut off the main valve first, then call 548-255-2662.
Older homes may still have an old water service line. Kitchener Utilities offers free lead testing for single and semi-detached homes with an unsoftened kitchen tap. If the line needs replacing, we can price it in writing.
Our shop is at 1192 Queen St in New Dundee, about 20 minutes from downtown Kitchener.
