Questions we get asked

Water treatment FAQ

How hard is the water in Kitchener-Waterloo?

17 to 36 grains per gallon, depending on the neighbourhood. Guelph is 21 to 33, and Plattsville is about 78.

Do I need a softener and an RO?

They do different jobs. A softener treats the whole house; RO is for drinking water. Many homes have both.

How much does a water softener cost?

A 30,000 grain softener is $1,650 plus HST installed when it replaces an existing softener ($1,800 plus HST for a first softener in the home), right for up to four people on hard water.

How much does reverse osmosis cost?

$750 plus HST installed new under the kitchen sink, faucet included; about $1,200 in the utility room with a line run to the kitchen sink; or $650 to swap an existing RO unit. After that, the four filters are changed once a year for $325 plus HST, and the membrane every 3 to 5 years (add $45 to $100 that year).

How often do RO and UV filters need changing?

Once a year for both. On a 5-stage RO, the four filters are changed yearly ($325 plus HST) and the membrane every 3 to 5 years, or when the flow slows. On a UV system, the bulb and the filter are changed yearly; we change the bulb with its quartz sleeve so the sleeve is clean and the light works at full strength ($425 plus HST). A new VIQUA VH200-F10 UV system is $1,265 plus HST installed. UV Dynamics is another good brand.
